I think the rule should be if it hits your arm then hard luck, it's a penalty, FULL STOP. Referees are not the brightest so you need objective parameters, not subjective ones. You're asking for trouble when you ask them to start using judgement, reason and common sense, especially with all the oil money sloshing about .
Something like this has to be the solution, because Saliba's arm was at least 70-100% natural. It's not clear at all.

It was Gillet at the VAR, so no surprise it was against Arsenal though.

Remember also that the main referee didn't judge it, so the VAR needs to be certain it's a mistake.

I don't think it was a clear mistake, as Saliba has to have arms like that to jump like he did. VAR sees that it was not going towards the goal either.

Can you imagine that some people questioned the White shot that was a penalty against Tottenham? It was a likely goal. Totally different situation, but both were penalties.

I had to jet off somewhere right after the game. What’s the TLDR around here?

My take was that we were crap. And it wasn’t “just” the players. This season we’re all about passing backwards apparently. I’m sure the idea is we keep the ball safely but in practice all we do is invite pressure onto ourselves and increase the chances of someone making a mistake.

And it’s dreadful to watch. Absolutely dreadful. Makes me sick. If we wanted this kind of football in the hunt for trophies we should have just got Mourinho in ffs.

We know Arteta and the team can play good attacking football. Just stick with that ffs.

I’m sure lots here will be hyped about how we showed “mentality” and managed to get sth out of the game at the end. Not me. That was diabolical football. Again.

Running out of excuses.

Tbf it says a lot about the team that I was expecting us to at least draw even at 2-0 down but still.

If anything that’s part of the problem. Like we all know we can score goals when we put our back into it. So why don’t we just start / play the whole game that way?

I’m a purist. I need decent football, or at least an attempt at decent football. I understand playing compact against City but against Chelsea?

Nah man.

I understand why it was given, but I didn't see if there was someone at the back post to score it? It was a natural position for Saliba to jump at the ball.

Do you want players to jump like penquins to avoid this to happen? Do you think it's football like we know it? It will affect everything.

It will make it look like not competent people are playing, if their first thought is if it will be a handball. And at certain times, this is not a handball resulting in a penalty.

This was not going towards the goal at all. I don't know if there was another player at the back post who could have scored it? It wasn't a goal scoring opportunity without a player at the back post. It wasn't going to the goal.

Imagine a penquin jumping at a football. That's what you want. I can't use a certain word here, but it's ridiculous. It's like the players have no hands. A football player needs hands to affect his trajectory when jumping.

I don't want football with no hands at all, and having defenders to keep them next to their body 100% of the time like penquins. It's not penquin football, it's human football.

They even looked at VAR if White's shot was a handball against Tottenham FFS. That was a clear shot in front of goal that was a likely goal.

I think the best solution and the right one is to make handball strict liability. If it hits your arm, it's a pen, regardless of this "natural position" crap which leaves it open to interpretation. If they chip it and it hits your arm accidentally then that's bad luck, just like an unintentional deflection which wrong-foots the keeper is bad luck, or Mudryk's mishit cross dropping into the net is bad luck. The rules shouldn't be written to avoid bad luck.

We did well to salvage this with a draw. I thought Arteta got his team selection completely wrong which dug us an unnecessary hole. He should’ve predicted we’d need physicality for this match and I’m not sure we can start games with Zinchenko and Jorginho against teams who are somewhat competent in direct attacks. A malnourished pivot is diabolical. I think I’d rather see El Neny to tell you the truth. He was playing 2nd striker like Havertz in his last appearance man may be rejuvenated. I’d like to see Ramsdale back in action as well.
Agree, as good as Arteta was in selections against City, here we were outdone by the pace and aggression of Chelsea in the midfield.

How could it be not a pen? His arm is waving wildly in the breeze and it stops the ball from going where it was going. Unlucky for Saliba but that's pen every day and twice on Sundays.
Hes in the air jumping, the ball deflects off Muddy how is intential? Ball to arm end of!

That's how it should go, because we have seen that the other methods don't work better.

I don't like it in a sense, but at least it's totally equal, as the refs seem too incompetent.

Worst thing is Gillet is supposedly a VAR specialist, having cut his teeth in that area in Aus before coming to the UK, but he's bloody terrible on VAR.
Meh game in not great conditions where our poor start and 2 very lucky Chelsea goals cost us, because as soon as we got our **** together, they couldn't live with us. 2 points dropped, but not a terrible result.

Balance still not right - but also no-one underestimating us like lastyear.

A point is very good given where we came from. Chelsea away is always difficult, they are better than the table suggests.

That being said, I haven't seen many teams having 70% possession and doing so little with it. Our front three were invisible and Ødegaard was ****ing poor. Has to be said, even though I love the guy.

Partey over Jorginho next time and a little more urgency. Still undefeated though! COYG

Late post- What a comeback! Chelsea fans are absolutely ****e. No atmosphere even when they were 2-0 ahead. Raya looks nervy as hell.

Declan is the BOSS! Give him the armband rightaway.

Could easily have lost to a Mudryk goal and given the chavs a much needed boost in their season. In that context I will take a point any day.

Worrying that we performed so poorly though, we are a a better team than Chelsea yet we failed to impose ourselves on them.

We were all over them in the last 15 min, but yeah why did it take so long? Not mentally prepared coming back from the break, for whatever reason.

You must have missed him ****ting his pants Vs City last week.

I saw it’s there were two close calls. I agree it wasn’t great, but he still kept a clean sheet against what many would argue the best team in Europe, so I don’t think his drawers were too dookied.

I have to say there is something odd with Arsenal Youtube channel, this is the second time I can't find a major blunder on it and had to watch our opponent channel highlights for a more complete highlights
- Arsenal vs Sp**s - Gabriel Jesus missing a sitter is not on our highlights
- Chelsea vs Arsenal - Raya's blunder that Chelsea failed to convert is not on our highlights

something odd is going on

Not the worst result tbh. Chelsea at the Bridge will probably take points away from some of City/Liverpool/Sp**s this season.

Arsenal Quotes

In 1997/98 we became English champions as I had set myself three missions to carry out which I felt were essential. One: to have an impact on the result and the team's playing style. Two: to foster the player's individual development. Three: to strengthen the structure of the club and enhance its global influence.
